Book Review: The Night Circus

So today I am going to be reviewing the fantasy novel, The Night Circus. Although I have read this novel before I recently picked it up again and rediscovered why I fell in love with the magical world that Erin Morgenstern created. Before getting into the plot of the story I want to spend some time discussing the construction of the story. This novel is paced at slow and steady speed so if you want to read a book with twenty plot twists, multiple explosions, and low plot development then the Night Circus is not for you. Whenever I tell a friend about this book and I tell them that its rather slowly paced they always regard this as a negative trait but in my opinion it is just the opposite. Morgenstern takes time to describe the subtle nuances of this world to reader and uses descriptive language to transport you into her imagination.
The main characters are two magicians Marco and Celia. We are introduced to both characters when they are still children and throughout the novel we are able to see them grow into individuals and experience their trials with the world of magic and deception. The setting of the novel rotates through time and many countries but the central setting is the traveling circus, Cirque de Reves.
The point of view is constantly changing and normally I find that annoying because there is always that one super annoying character that you hate to read from, but all of Morgenstern’s characters have engaging and significant points of view that allow the reader to achieve an all-encompassing account of the plot. My personal favorite sections are the parts of the novel where the reader is reading from the perspective of a patron of the circus. Morgenstern is such a master of description that you can almost feel the sensations that are being described.
I give the Night Circus a four out of five! I would recommend it to anyone that has ever wished something magical would enter you world and take you on a spectacular journey!
